Baby Caps v Baby Flyers

Today I went to the Caps and Flyers rookie game at Kettler. It was fantastic! Caps on in the 18th minute in the 3rd thanks to Cody Eakin. Not only did I see the rookies, but Backstrom, Ovechkin, Neuvirth, Perreault, Bouchard, Gordon and Alzner (probably more) were there "cheering" on the baby Caps. I'll post some more pictures later.

"The Washington Capitals have signed unrestricted free agent goaltender Dany Sabourin to a one-year contract, vice president and general manager George McPhee announced today. In keeping with club policy, financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

A 6'4", 200-pound native of Val-d'Or, Quebec, Sabourin (SA-boo-rihn) is a 10-year professional who has played 57 NHL games for Calgary, Pittsburgh and Vancouver. He spent 2009-10 with the Providence Bruins of the American Hockey League (AHL), posting a 28-27-0 record in 56 appearances with a 2.67 goals-against average, a .915 save percentage and three shutouts. He finished third in the AHL in saves (1,579), fourth in minutes (3,278) and tied for sixth in wins.

Sabourin, who will turn 30 on Sept. 2, played 43 games in the NHL in 2007-08 and '08-09 while with the Penguins, posting a 16-17-3 record in that time. This season marked the first time since the 2004-05 work stoppage that he didn't play at least one game at the NHL level. He was named the AHL's top goaltender in 2005-06 when he led the league with a 2.26 goals-against average with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins.

Sabourin was originally a fourth-round choice, 108th overall, of Calgary in the 1998 NHL Draft."

Last night was the 1st round of the NHL Draft. Unfortunately, I was not able to view it...well not really "unfortunately" because the Orioles rallied to win against the Nationals in an awesome game (seriously, it was an awesome game). Anyway, the Capitals had #26 and chose Evgeny Kuznetsov.

So let's find out a bit about this cat.

"Weaknesses: Small and easily muscled off the puck by larger opponents. Needs to add 15-20 pounds of muscle. Has the 'Russian Factor' to overcome which is the biggest reason he is not a first round selection. Has intensity and compete level inconsistencies as one game his feet never stop moving and the other times he barely gets his engine going. Defensively needs much work and coaching."

"Notes: After a disappointing IIHF U20 World Junior Championship in Saskatoon with an underachieving Russian squad, Kuznetsov has been able to push his draft stock up with dominating performance at both the 6-Nations Tournament in February and the IIHF U18 World Championship this past April. " Caleb Herbert was a little late to the NHL Draft radar after missing most of his sophomore season of high school hockey with a broken leg. But that summer, he returned to the ice and was extremely impressive at USA Hockey’s Select 17, earning an invite to the US Select team that traveled to the Ivan Hlinka tournament.

The following winter, he returned to Bloomington Jefferson and helped return the Jaguars to prominence, by going undefeated until losing to powerhouse Edina in the section final. In his senior year, he was the leading scorer in the fall Elite League, and was a finalist for Minnesota’s Mr. Hockey award.

Herbert is a very gifted offensive player. He’s got an excellent burst of speed, and great instincts in the offensive zone. He’ll likely play a year in the USHL next season, where he’ll refine his offensive skill against older, tougher competition, before heading to the University of Minnesota-Duluth in 2011

Herbert definitely seems like a boom-or-bust type of prospect, whose future will depend on his ability to keep scoring lots of goals, something that may be tougher as he faces better, and perhaps more importantly at his size, bigger, more physical competition. But there is certainly enough talent there to justify using a mid-to-late round draft pick on him.

He’ll get a year in the USHL, and four years at Minnesota-Duluth which should help him develop into a more well-rounded, complete player. If he adds that dimension to his game, along with speed and ability to contribute offensively, he could develop into a solid second or third line forward for some NHL team"

Yesterday were two ridiculous IIHF games. Game 1: Germany v Switzerland; Game 2: Russia v Canada.

Game 1: Germany v Switzerland

Germany ended up winning against Switzerland (1-0) but not without some drama. First of all, Germany wasn't even supposed to be in the World Championships...it just so happened that they were hosting them, so you know, it would be nice if they could play. Along with the Danes, they've been some sort of a dark horse in these games. Anyway, back to the drama. The Germans thought that they won the match, but apparently due to international icing rules there was one second left....so they had to roll up the carpet, lead the mascot off the ice, have the teams to back to their prospective benches, and get on with their faceoff for one second. After that one second was up all hell broke loose. Assistant coach for the Germans got into it one of the Swiss team members and the German coach was having none of that! Swiss are out but Germans have a very important game against the Russians on Saturday. Team on team rumble (+ coach) and blood on the ice! I love hockey!

Game 2: Russia v Canada.

Olympics revisited or what to expect in Sochi? Who knows. Well, it would have been better if they played this game tomorrow instead of yesterday, but whatever. Brooks Laich and Ovechkin got into it, which was pretty ridiculous. Let's hope what happens in Germany, stays in Germany. It was a good match riddled with penalties, but it wasn't enough for Team Canada who are now out of the championships.

What the hell was that, Bruins?

So luckily I was cheering on the Baltimore Orioles last night rather than watching the Bruins v Flyers game because I assure you I would be more upset about than I am now. How the hell did the Flyers when the Bruins were up 3-0 in the series! (granted Caps were up 3-1, but 3-0 is way worse). Not only that, but were up 3-0 in the first period! I wonder if anything would have changed if they substituted Rask for Thomas after that 3rd goal. I'm sure it would have made Rask go berzerk, but then Thomas isn't shy either. Grumble grumble grumble. Man, I hate the Flyers....like really hate them. But at least they know get to take on the wrath of Halak, Markov, and Gill. Hopefully they'll irritate them so much that Carcillo, Hartnell and Pronger will all get game misconducts every single game so I won't have to look at them. Oh well, c'est la via and all that.

Reasons why this Penguins loss is important to Caps morale

I'm sure you know by now that the Penguins loss to those pesky Canadiens that just didn't seem to want to stay down. Caps got Halak'd and now the Pens. This is very important to Caps fans. Reasoning below:

1) There is a lot of bias between Penguins and Capitals fans/media and now that the Penguins loss there is no reason to say that #8 led their team to failure. It can now be said that #87 led their team to failure.

2) Penguins fans got a taste of karma. "City of Champions" my ass.

3) Habs shut down Crosby and Malkin the same way they did Ovechkin and Semin. Habs played pretty much the same way they did against us.

4) We know that Caps only lose to winners.

5) I don't have to hear shit talk from Penguins fans saying that their team is better (granted the made it through the 1st round but whatever...)

6) Now my prediction of a Sharks v Montreal final can come into fruition.

- HAHAHAHA Bears scored their first within the first 20 seconds and Habs scored in 32 seconds. tonight is going to be good

To my great surprise, last night I found out that Universal Sports (which I believe you can only see via Converter box) plays some of the World Championships. So while I settled down to watch the Russia v Slovakia game (pre-recorded, mind you...it's not as fancy as cable) I noticed something hilarious. Russia's 6'7'' goaltender (probably playing because Varly's equipment is still missing), Vasiliy Kosechkin has the most adorable mask I've ever seen. This guy is friggin' huge and barely fits in the net...yet his mask is full of kittens! You sir, are adorable and I will root for you forever....even though you're a Tampa Bay prospect.

He named the cat and it gets bored. Goaltenders are a different breed.

Welp, since my boys, the Caps, lost in the first round of the playoffs on Wednesday I had to come to the realization that I needed to back a new team. Obviously it can't be Pittsburgh. I would like to have Montreal end up in the final just because it would make me feel better about our lost. Besides the Caps only lose to winners (which is why we beat the penguins 4 times during the regular season). So, I believe the final will be a matchup between Montreal and SAN JOSE who will win it all. This is because, not only are they good, but last year San Jose won the President's Trophy and lost in the first round of the playoffs (not until a certain team this year). So, it only seems fitting that if San Jose wins it all, the Caps will obviously win next year. After all, history ALWAYS repeats itself. Not to mention, the Sharks live in a friggin' Shark Tank and the come out of a shark's mouth. HOW BADASS IS THAT?! Seriously, what is more badass because I'd like to know.

Semin = "Two Face"

Whenever I see pictures of Alexander Semin of the Washington Capitals I am instantly reminded of the Seinfeld episode "The Strike." During this episode, Jerry announced the concept of "two-face" which according to Wikipedia is "someone who looks attractive sometimes and looks bad at other times, depending on exterior conditions, such as lighting." However, it's not so much attractiveness as it is oldness.

My night with the Hershey Bears

Due to my obsession with hockey, I decided that for my 25th birthday I'd go see the Hershey Bears! What more perfect game than the day before my actual birthday and team photo giveaway and 90 minute after game signing night! So I took 11 of my best friends and headed up to Hershey. We all headed up in different ways considering the way relationships work. Whatever. Anyway, we went to Chocolate World prior and it was alright. We got to hang out in a Hershey Kiss for like 2 minutes and learn about the history of chocolate. Who doesn't love that?

Anyway, it was a decent game. A bit slower than NHL but then when you go to Caps games, those aren't exactly typical this season. Anyway, they ended up breaking their 24 home game winning streak and I'm pretty sure I'm bad luck now :-/ It was against the Adirondack Phantoms who are the farm team for the Flyers and apparently they aren't making playoffs anymore, so they had nothing to lose and it definitely showed. They were feisty.

Karl Alzner. He's pretty good. Washington's 1st round choice (5th overall) in 2007 draft.
Keith Aucoin. Has 35 goals in the AHL this season so far and 94 points. Good? Yes.

Francois Bouchard. Washington's 2nd round choice (35th overall) in 2006 draft. He's pretty awesome. I think the players with longer hair were convinced to wear hats since they had to since pretty much right after the game.

Bryan Helmer. El Capitan. 39 points away from becoming the all-time leading scorer among AHL defensemen. Although that could have changed since the last time I checked the stats. Man, I love stats.

Anton Gustafsson. Came back to the Bears a week ago or so and I don't believe has played due to injury. Son of Bengt Gustafsson. However, majority of the people there didn't know who he was and his line maybe had 3-4 people at a time. He was bored at times and would get up from his seat and color in his numbers stealthy while looking behind him as if we were up to no good. He's great and very friendly.

Braden Holtby. Sadly this was the best picture I could get since his line was too long and it was about closing time. He's a pretty good goaltender and happened to be the Caps' 4th round pick (93rd overall) in 2008.Boyd Kane. Not bad, not bad. 22 goals and 40 points. Originally with the Philadelphia Phantoms (now Adirondack Phantoms).
Chris Bourque. Was affiliated with those Penguins, but we're glad he's back. Has had a pretty good season thus far with 22 goals and 66 points.

Alexander Giroux. 40 goals and 93 points this season. Very, very good.

Mathieu Perreault. I will admit that Mr. Perreault is my favorite Hershey Bear and was ecstatic when he signed my team photo with Happy Birthday Katie, despite the fact he didn't know how to spell Birthday. I guess it should have been Bon Anniversaire! Washington's 6th round pick (177th overall) in 2006 draft.

Sean Collins. Played with the Caps last season for 15 games (Defense).

Sadly, I didn't have time to get Andrew Gordon to sign anything or have a picture with him, but he's a great guy. There was an elderly women in the bleachers who couldn't go on the ice and Andrew climbed to her and had a picture with her and climbed back. Awwww. As far as I know it was his grandmother, but it was still nice.

I love hockey.

Friends don't let friends go to Denver University

I recently applied to the Forensic Psychology program within the Professional Psychology Department at Denver University. I found out that they wanted an interview me and I was rather excited, mostly because I never thought I would get that far due to my undergraduate grades and GRE scores. So I went up to Denver for a weekend and found out that there were around 100 applicants and 42 interviews. Awesome, I said to myself.

The interview went horribly. They decided that it was an issue that my grades weren't quite they wanted and asked me "your grades aren't the greatest, why do you think you'll succeed here?" Valid question, I suppose, but if you thought this was an issue why did you ask me for an interview? Apparently it was due to my experience, which is awesome, but still. Well, luckily for me, I found out that this wasn't the university for me during the interview since they don't offer any research whatsoever and only offer Clinical settings...aka...therapy. No thanks. But they made this clear when the interview asked me "So why are you applying here and not a research school? Hmmm?" Yes, they actually said "Hmmm?" The website did not specify that they did absolutely no research, so that's why I went to the interview! Whatever.

Anyway, so 100 applicants to 42 interviews to 25 who receive acceptance. It became apparent as my interview proceeded that this was not going well and I will not be accepted, so it should be no surprise when I received my rejection letter. However, it could have been less pretentious. Yes, my interviewer was rather snotty and so the tone of this letter should be no surprise. Frankly, I'm glad I wasn't accepted...well I would have said no anyway. Enjoy the read below...I know I did:

Dear Kathryn:

I regret to inform you that the Graduate Admissions Committee cannot offer you admission to the Master's program in Forensic Psychology in the Graduate School of Professional Psychology at this time. We were fortunate to receive more highly qualified applicants than we can accommodate for the positions available, and, therefore, we are not able to offer admission to many good applicants. It is unfortunate that decisions like this have to be made. We evaluate applications globally, so it is impossible to point to a single aspect of an application and identify it as a reason for an offer of admission or as a reason an offer was not made. Our overriding concern is to be fair to applicants and to make offers to promising MAFP students.

We wish you the best in your future endeavors.

If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to contact us.

So basically there are "more highly qualified applicants" whereas I was only "good" and apparently not a "promising MAFP student." And who says "sincerely yours" in a rejection letter? Ew.

Oh well. I went on the tour just to see the DU hockey rink. Those Denver Pioneers aren't too shabby in the NCAA.

Panthers v. Capitals - January 29, 2010

I knew the game yesterday was going to be interesting due to the fact that the Capstronaut magically touched down in the section next to us. After the first Caps goal by Backstrom, he celebrated by running up and down the stairs. Well I guess I should use the word "running" loosely considering he's an astronaut. He fistpumped and danced around whilst having zero gravity for the remainder of the period. I didn't realize that his suit actually had "capstronaut" on the back of it...unless that's new. He also had a cohort with him who helped him drink his water and walked with him wherever he went. He had a Capstronaut jersey and I'm pretty sure he was his bodyguard.

After the first period he did end up back at his usual location...intimidating the visiting team behind their bench with his "I'm watching you" stare. While down there he actually has event staff sit next to him. He's a pretty big deal in these parts these days.

During the first period Mr. Backstrom gets his 22nd goal and Green gets a 2 minute elbowing penalty that would eventually suspend him for 3 games. Frankly it seems a little harsh but the NHL is cracking down on any hit that connects with a head regardless of injury on the other player. I will admit that I missed this happen because I was too distracted with the Capstronaut dancing around.

Knuble gets his 17th goal in the second and both teams get a few penalties. Also during the second, Green goes down with a knee to knee with Kulikov. Some say it was karma for the elbow in the first, who knows. He wasn't moving for a couple minutes but managed to get off the ice with a little help from Fehr. That's never anything you want to see, but luckily it wasn't a bad injury considering that he wanted to come back in during the third but Boudreau wouldn't let him. I'm sure his response was "awww shucks awww jeez coach! Let me in the game!" His injury seemed to have been an epic charley horse.

During the third Schultz finally gets a goal. It was his second this season, but as stats go he was the last Caps player to get a goal within 11 games. Go Schultz! He's silent but deadly. Knuble gets another goal as well.

All said and done, we won 4-1 over the Panthers!

After the game, my friend decided to "stalk" the players. Well in the sense of knowing where the only exit is to the garage. The players know the drill. If there's a red light out the garage then they roll down the window and talk with us. If not, they sped away. Luckily for them, most of them got green lights.

Now while I'm a lover of cars, I'll spare them with not giving the details of their cars and make me seem less creepy. Although if you ask, I'll tell you. I will say this...Morrison drives a Taurus. I just had to put it out there. He was the only one not driving an Aston Martin, Bentley, Audi, Mercedes, Lexus, Ranger Rover, or Lincoln. Even Neuvirth had a nice car.

I was actually amazed at the lack of time it took for the game to end and for them to leave. It was maybe 30 minutes at the most.

We heard the rev of an engine in the depths of the parking garage and Semin was the first out and quickly sped away in a silver torpedo with Poti in quick pursuit. Although they all sped off rather quickly if they didn't have the red light. Green was the unlucky one. While he was injured his was able to drive away (albeit not in his Lamborghini...but in a car that started with a "B"...you know the kind). His Lambo was behind him being driven by somebody else and going the opposite direction of him. My friend was able to get a signature from him at the red light.

Bradley rolled down his window and waved while he sped away. He looked rather happy.

The "AO GR8" revved his engine and when my friend shouted "Ovechkin!" he burned out and fishtailed for us. He's always looking to please his fans. It's not really a well-kept secret as to what he drives, but it truly is the batmobile.

We'll see if I "stalk" the players again. Frankly, I feel a bit awkward since there wasn't anybody else there aside from us. Apparently there's usually more standing out there, but not this time.

horrible work story

So i'm kinda regretting my decision to take this new job. Today (my second day on the job) i got reemed by my company's president for not being confident enough and that i'm not supposed to say "i don't know" blah blah blah. This went on for a good 15 minutes. and he made me repeat things like i was a baby. and i had absolutely no idea why he was telling me these things. I started this job yesterday so of course i'm not going to know much.

Anyway, luckily this guy that is kinda my supervisor was also there and explained what brought this on. Apparently my new supervisor and a guy who is the "client" don't exactly like each other for whatever reason and the "client" guy heard me tell somebody that i didn't know what i was doing or something. Either that or when he asked who me who my supervisor was even before i started the job i said that i didn't know because nobody had told me yet.

so! the "client" guy went straight to the president of the company to get my new supervisor in trouble for not doing his job and apparently me as well.

so i get a call from my new supervisor (because i work in Frederick but report to DC) and was like "i heard you had a meeting today" and i was like "yes" and he was like "let this be a lesson to you about how you speak with the client" and i said "i honestly have no idea how this all happened." he then said that "some people are sometimes difficult"

so apparently i'm going to be in the middle of some bullshit because two guys can't get along

I finally found 3 recommendations for graduate school despite having two professors decline. I guess 2.5 years is a rather long time. Oh well. I'm hoping i make the December 1st deadline for the first one!
